Terry Crull

Terry Crull is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS…where he received the 2024-2025 FHSU Faculty Member of the Year Award. His duties include conducting Fort Hays Singers, Concert Choir, Women's Chorale, and Smoky Hill Chorale. He is music director of the FHSU Musical, supervises choral student teachers, and teaches courses in choral conducting, choral music education, and music appreciation. Professional memberships are in ACDA, KCDA, KMEA, & NAfME.
2026-2027 marks the twenty-second year Dr. Crull has been at FHSU. During those years the Concert Choir and Fort Hays Singers have been selected to perform at the KMEA Workshop ten times. Fort Hays Singers regularly tours to and from Estes Park, Branson, Oklahoma City, and Kansas/Nebraska. Extended tours have been to Taiwan (2007), Austria (2018), Hawaii (2021-Pearl Harbor 80th), and the Salzburg (Austria) Choral Festival in 2024. In December 2026 the Fort Hays Singers will travel to Florida, having been invited to sing in the Candlelight Processional at Disney World on Friday, December 11. The 2026-2027 school year marks the end of Dr. Crull's 48-year teaching career, as he will retire in May 2027.
In June 2024 Dr. Crull was the Conductor for the "Jubilate Mozart!" Choral Festival in Salzburg, Austria, sponsored by Music Celebrations International. He conducted the 100-voice mass choir in the Salzburg Dom (cathedral) where Mozart was baptized. The choir included the Smoky Hill Chorale of Hays, which also sang concerts in Wies, Melk, and Vienna.
Dr. Crull has conducted District Honor Choirs throughout Kansas, and numerous vocal clinics in Western Kansas. He has also conducted festivals in California, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Salzburg (Austria). Dr. Crull has conducted many church choirs, and has been actor, musical director, conductor, producer, or stage director for over 110 theatrical productions.
Dr. Crull has degrees in choral music from the University of Northern Colorado, the University of South Dakota, and Dordt University. His 48-year career in teaching includes Ontario Christian School, Ontario, CA; Unity Christian HS, Orange City, IA; Dakota Wesleyan University, Mitchell, SD; the University of Northern Colorado (GTA), Greeley, CO, and FHSU.

Late Entry fees must be paid prior to auditioning.
Selected HS Choir participants will incur a $15 participation fee.
Welcome all who are new and/or new to the Northwest District. If you have questions please ask. If you are a new teacher I encourage you to take advantage of our fantastic mentoring program that links you to an experienced teacher who can help answer questions and guide you through your first year. All teachers please make sure to check both this website, as well as the state website at ksmea.org for updates and deadlines.
The regular deadline for online registration is Sunday, October 11. This is for both state and district auditions. You must register online all students who wish to audition (except for on-site entries). Students in grades 9-12 are eligible to audition for District Honor Choir and are also eligible to be selected for the State Choir. I encourage you to register them early, but please make sure you have the correct voice part listed.
Live auditions for State and District Choir will be held on Saturday, November 7, in conjunction with the JH Honor Choir and Band and the High School Jazz Ensemble convention. Please be willing to assist with the process by volunteering to judge, tabulate, or work as a door monitor, or at the registration table. When you turn in your District Choir fees for participants please make sure you include a copy of the invoice. Reminder—to be eligible for KMEA All-State Choirs, students must be in attendance for the entire District Concert at the December convention. If a student leaves early, they will be disqualified for consideration.
The District Convention will be held on Saturday, December 5 at Fort Hays State University. Repertoire for the concert will consist of the audition pieces and additional pieces chosen by the clinician.
