Greetings Northwest Kansas Choral Teachers! I hope you are having an enjoyable summer. As we look toward the coming year, I would like to welcome all those that are new to the Northwest District. Please do not hesitate to ask questions. I will gladly answer questions or direct you to someone more qualified. We do have a mentoring program in which an experienced teacher can help answer questions and guide you through your first year. Make sure that you keep yourself informed by checking both this website, as well as the state website at ksmea.org for updates and deadlines.

The District Convention will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Fort Hays State University. Our clinician will be Dr. Mark Lucas, Choral Director at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. Repertoire for the concert will consist of the three audition pieces and additional pieces chosen by the clinician. Note that, this year, a treble choir will be selected for both District and State, as well as the Mixed Choir. The girls will have two audition pieces and the boys will have one piece that is the same as one of the girls' and one additional piece. This is also the year for "Over the Rainbow" so if you need music for that, contact Janet Seehafer or Kayla Tiemeyer.

The regular deadline for online registration is Sunday, October 7, 2018. This is for both state and district auditions. You must register online all students who wish to audition (except for on-site entries). Students in grades 9-12 are eligible to audition for District Honor Choir and those in grades 10-12 will be eligible to be selected for the State Choir. I encourage you to start the registration process early.

Live auditions for State and District Choir will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2018, in conjunction with the JH Honor Choir and Band and the High School Jazz Ensemble convention. Please be willing to assist with the process by volunteering to judge, tabulate, or work as a door monitor or at the registration table. Audition selection times will be longer than in the past because they are singing two instead of three numbers. (Approximately 45 seconds) From the auditions, the top S1, S2, A1, A2 score will be placed in the Treble Choir; the second place score in the Mixed Choir and alternate until the allotted numbers for each voice part has been filled.

The music for the audition will be the same as listed on the State Honor Choir site. Rehearsal tracks are available from the state choir chair at systems.ksmea.org/hschoir. Please remember that all KSHSAA eligibility rules apply for participation in KMEA. Also, to be eligible to be considered for the State Honor Choir, students must be in attendance for the entire District Honor Choir and Band Concert at the December convention. If a student leaves early, they will be disqualified for consideration. You, as their teacher, must also have your KMEA membership current for your students to be elligible for District and State participation.

Good luck with your preparations and please contact me if you have any questions.
